As of December 6th, 2021 all proceeds from every purchase out of the AprilStultsBooks webstore will go to fund medically necessary procedures for her rare venous malformations.
In 2010, April underwent a life-saving surgery to remove a baseball sized venous malformation aneurysm on her jugular vein. Most know these malformations as AVMs, but hers was being fed by the jugular vein (JVM) and invisible to ALL scans. For years doctors had insisted that nothing was wrong with her and she would "have to live with it", referring to the intense pressure pain she was experiencing. Imagine a headache that morphine doesn't make fade, that was the pain experienced for 3 straight years.
Typically, a person is given a 3 year recurring rate on these malformations once removed, as it is virtually impossible to eradicate completely. The Body is a Natural Healer and will generate new veins or arteries to re-establish a connection once removed. Don't take our word for it, research this for yourself. It is 100% accurate information! April went 11 years without a recurrence, which is undeniably amazing!
Fast-forward to 2021. Her year of branching out as an author and changing careers completely. With school visits scheduled and Writing Coaching classes underway, another mass appeared and became a cause for concern, the pain being a clear indicator that something wasn't right. The wonderful doctors at UF Shans in Gainesville Florida were able to identify 2 new venous malformations and conclude that at least one of the areas is treatable. The fact that an MRI could pick up these clusters is a miracle in its own right! Double this with new possible treatments that could alleviate the pressure/pain! Double Blessings!!
What does this mean for April Stults Books. For starters, every purchase made will go to fund these life-saving medically necessary treatments. Coaching courses and school visits will be paused for the month of February as the doctors are unable to guarantee the outcome of the first procedure. While we want to expect the best, it is impossible to predict how the body will react to such invasive treatments.
We are still on schedule for a publication release of Milo Leans into Kindness for late February 2022 but the release event will be postponed until further notice. February 4th Update
What we learned? For starters, we learned that this surgery would be the first of several needed to see any considerable results. The exploratory process identified it is not an AVM, meaning not arterially fed (which we already knew being it's minimal visibility in MRI and CT scans) and is being fed by an alternate source - these two masses have not been clearly identified as of yet as a JVM like its predecessor. More exploratory surgery is needed.
Sclerotherapy injections were then performed in several of the venous branches. This is a tedious process and will be done gradually. Previous symptoms: pressure headaches and vertigo-like symptoms have not been alleviated as of yet. There was a mild skin reaction to the sclerotherapy injection solution, but that's of non importance.
The next office visit may include a visual presentation of the after effects of eating foods that commonly aggravate symptoms. "Basically, I'll probably eat a handful of skittles and let the doctor watch how an aggressive mass forms at the base of my ear - and now, the side of my face!"
That's it for now, but we'll keep you posted!
